July 04 Truppenführung----pt2 Part 1 of this book primarily deals with orders of battle, TO&E, etc. As I am not making this blog related to the combat, except through examples, I will not really touch on this chapter, except the one primary "non war" lesson to be gained here....Organize forces with the intent to accomplish the mission..or, in other words...1-see the problem 2-decide how you will 'attack' it...how will you solve it? and 3- give yourself all of the tools you need to follow your plan, then execute. The next installment will be "Command"...tools of leadership. I would like to take a quick break and say Happy Independence Day to my American friends. Also, congratulations to my beautiful sister, soon to be my MARRIED little sister, I wish you all the happiness in the world. ~k July 02 Truppenführung For many years, the army of my homeland was regarded as the greatest in Europe, and, man for man, one of the greatest in the planet's history. In both World Wars of the last century, despite being overwhelmingly outnumbered, they came very near to winning, both times. Say what you will of the regime they served, the second time, but even in the second half of that war, when it was basically Germany against the world, the Wehrmacht nearly won, and even in defeat, generally gave as well as they took. There actually was a key to this battlefield success. No, it is not some mysterious German/Prussian "warrior gene". The key, in the second world war, was German training, leadership, and tactical/operational doctrine. The doctrine was mostly summed up in the book/manual "Truppenführung"... essentially translated as "unit command" or, command of troops. To this day, the US Army, for just one example, use tactical and operational doctrine, from this book, to create the US Army Field Manual "FM 100-5", which manual's first edition, was written after WW2, with the assistance of former Wehrmacht officers, who used their own experience, to educate their former enemies in America, for what was thought to be, the next war, against the Soviet Union. But this is just a small amount of background. What I will be doing over the next few weeks as I plunge into my own studies, is to piece by piece, go through this manual here in my blog. I will sum up the writings, essentially, but from a different angle. Probably, none of my readers will ever command troops, and almost certainly, not in battlefield situations....so what I intend to do, is to apply these principles to other problems, and show how the same ideas that can win battles, also, may win in business, in school, etc. So, I hope that you all will enjoy this effort. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Truppenführung paragraphs 1-15...Essentially, this is only the equivalent of the "introduction" in most books....but there actually are lessons, even here. War is an art, although its conduct is based upon scientific principles. Therefore, this is not a strict set of rules to follow. Every situation encountered will have many variables. It is up to the commander to quickly analyze the situation, and come to a decision. The intent of this decision, is to be decisive. Generally speaking, simple actions, logically carried out, will achieve most objectives. Conflict subjects individuals to the greatest test of their spiritual and physical endurance. Because this is so, a leaders character will have more influence, than their intellect, upon the outcome. To effectively lead, or command, one must be possessed of sound judgement, clear vision, and foresight. One must be able to make independent and decisive decisions, carrying them out unwaveringly, and accepting full responsibility for their outcome. An officer is, in every sense, to be a leader, and a teacher. He must be knowledgeable of his men, of their particular situations, and possesing of a strong sense of justice. He must be able to do, what he requires of his men, and perform it with obvious excellence. In the stress of combat operations, the men must never doubt that their leaders have their well being at heart. This will increase general morale, and make men capable of extraordinary feats. Mutual Trust is the surest foundation for discipline in times of need and danger. Every leader, in every situation, must give totally of himself, never avoiding responsibility.. In fact, willingness to accept responsibility is the most important quality of a leader. However, this willingness should never be based upon individualism without consideration of the whole, nor should it be used as justification for failure to carry out orders where assuming to know better may affect obedience. Independence of spirit must never become arbitrariness, but independence of action, within accepted boundaries, is the key to great success. Finally, the force which is deployed in a battle, must be sufficient to achieve the objective of that battle. If the force is insufficient, the objective must be changed, or battle must be avoided. Orders which are impossible to carry out will quickly reduce confidence in leadership, and will damage morale. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the introduction, we see a few things worth remembering. First, anyone can BE a "boss" or a "manager"...but for the greatest results, it is necessary to be a "leader"...German officers generally led from in front. That meant, many of them died, but it also meant, their men, would often "walk through fire" for their leaders, who earned the respect of the men, rather than demanded the respect. How many "leaders" today lead? It seems from a quick glance, at politics, at business, etc...that most, stay safely in back, letting others take the fall, if the "battle" is lost, but still near enough to take the credit, if somehow it is won. One other note, from these first paragraphs...I consider it so important, that it is the only one, that I actually wrote word for word, from the original(this was actually 15 paragraphs, summed up)..."Generally speaking, simple actions, logically carried out, will usually achieve the objective"... How many times, are we in trouble, and begin thinking wildly, trying to pull a solution "out of the air"....take a breathe, calm down, think logically.... what is the problem? Take another breathe, calmly, make a SIMPLE plan...then, execute it. I hope this will not bore my readers, give me a chance here, and I promise, over the coming days, there will be many helpful ideas from this work. Thank you all for reading. More tomorrow..as we look at organization. June 25 Nothing is ever over. Some days(most days) I talk (yell) at the computer. I find it troubling when friends on the other side of the planet are having troubles that I am unable to help. I always believe, that everything happens for a specific reason (fate?)...so, that would mean that every one of you, I met for a specific reason, as well. How can that reason be, to watch one of you suffer from the across an ocean? Yet, how can I help.... Well, for one, my life, is proof to anyone who knows me, that you never should give up. I should be dead, several times, yet still, here I am, among the living(well....ok...sometimes) So to my friends having difficulties(you know who you are as you read this without me saying anything) I am proof that even when the day looks black, the sun can still break through. I know that perhaps, you are so overwhelmed by the problems, that you refuse to see this....the good news is, that refusing to see something, does not by itself, make that something not exist. So do what you feel you must do, but somewhere in you, keep the spark, and I promise you that although it does not seem so now, that spark will still turn into the fire...the world will balance itself back out. ..... There truly are evil things in the world, but the right things, the good things, the true things, are stronger....if not, I already would have been dead, instead of sitting here tonight writing words that I hope will show you that there still is light, just perhaps it is buried for a short time. Nothing is ever over...the world spins, where it was daylight, will still have its night, where it was night, will have its sunny day.The days spin by on the calendars. Just be patient, and you will have your time on top. June 24 rant I have many times here, written of my gratitude for the outlet that "Spaces.live" has given. Dark days of my own, struggling with health and personal issues, far from home, I would have not made it without my friends on here, and you all know who you are. I have often also believed that the internet, in general, is the key to the "better world" we all search for, the ability to spread information is better than at any point in human history. However, the ability to spread KNOWLEDGE, is somewhat lacking, and is perhaps made worse with the development of the internet. Sometimes it seems people have become too lazy to educate themselves, instead, looking online for something to believe in. This would be wonderful, except, that it is possible to find so much information online, but much of it is false. I am reminded of a famous countryman of mine, who wrote, regarding warfare, "Ein großer Teil der Nachrichten, die man im Kriege bekommt, ist widersprechend,
ein noch größerer ist falsch und bei weitem der größte
einer ziemlichen Ungewißheit unterworfen." or, roughly in English "Most part of the information obtained in war is contradictory, more part is false, and by far the greatest part is of a doubtful
character"...it is possible to find something online, which agrees with any viewpoint, and oftentimes, that is as far as anyone looks, only to see something "in writing" they can point to and say"see, I am correct". There is an entire generation growing up who without question, believe in the "facts" as presented by such 'experts' as "Youtube" "AP" "Reuters" etc etc. Any fact that can be found in a 5 second search, despite the fact that someone searching from the opposite side of the argument, can also pull up their own 5 second search that agrees with THEIR view. It is time that some sort of regulation be applied here, lest we raise up more millions of uneducated "adults" who have forgotten how to LEARN, and instead only know how to type a word in the search button. This may seem like a rant...well, it is  I was just amazed recently by a situation where a computer had gone down, and the person whose job was to be a cashier, had no idea how to do that job, without a computer....it caused me to wonder, how stores ever survived in the many centuries before computers became commonplace. Hope everyone is having a good week. June 21 keine When will the rain stop, I want to know when will the sun shine again, and all the clouds go. Its been raining now for such a very long time the waters gone and washed away what I thought was mine The weather man predicted sunny skies forever more But then came clouds and lightning and it began to pour When will the rain stop, is all I want to know I need the sun to shine again I need the clouds to go. I wrote this 15 yrs ago. Today, the words just popped back into my head. To our brothers in Iran struggling against oppression, we send you our best wishes. The voices of the people cannot forever be silenced. Every day that dawns brings us closer to a new era. We must make sure, that the promise that is within our reach, is seized. To watch the people who had their votes stolen, take to the streets, and then be chased off, as if they were cattle, is an outrage. It is also, further proof that democracy, in general, is a foolish system of government. Those in power generally do or say anything, to remain in power. Those out of power, say or do anything, to gain the power. The voice of the people, is seldom paid any attention, despite the claims that democracy is supposedly controlled by the people. June 19 A whisper of hope Hope so faint that you fear, even to whisper it, and it will vanish. The first small seeds planted, of what some day will become a great forest of trees. Some people always see the glass as half empty, some people always see it, half full. Myself, I just drink it down, and get to work. The most promising signs today of victory in the air. For the first time I can almost allow myself to believe in a happy ending here. Hope you all are well. June 15 The same dream I cannot explain why for years now, I have had the same dream, with only minor changes each time...not "factual"changes, but, almost as if, for that particular "dream episode" the view is zoomed to a different area and viewpoint. It is a massive battlefield circa~1200-1300AD, everywhere there are banners flying, and all the "pomp and circumstance" which once was seen as the "glory" of war. My side, crosses a river on horseback, coming down and into a bright cold morning with a wide field. Banners can be seen on the other side of the field, the horses nervous sounds grow in volume, and then, we attack. Sometimes, I wake, as soon as the horse I am riding in the dream, begins to gallop into its charge, sometimes, the dream lasts longer, the clash of the two front lines, sometimes, it lasts long enough to where myself in the dream, is hit by an arrow of some sort, and feel myself falling from the horse, waking with a sore chest, where the arrow hit i n the dream. I wish I know if there is something I am supposed to remember from these dreams. When I was small, they scared me. Now, I just try to write pieces down when I wake up. June 11 Nur das erste von vielen It has been some days since I have written here. So much going on in my life, but yet, I feel speechless, which is a strange thing for me. I hope my friends all are well. I cannot honestly say, that I am well, but, I can say, that I will be. Life seen through the eyes of theory, never has quite the same view, seen from the front lines. Where theory tells you "if 'A' happens, you must do 'B', but if 'C' happens, you should do 'D' ", but, in real life, often, it is not only 'A' happening, but also, 'C' at the same time...and the books never mention that lol. So, we adjust, we learn, we perhaps develop the bad habit of taking shortcuts...and life happens. In the end though, it is not our problems that we are remembered for, but rather, the solutions that we find to them. Ein durchdachter Blick auf unseren Wunsch. Die Söhne meines Vaterlands haben lang gewünscht, zu unserem Platz zurückzukommen. Ich glaube auch diesem Zug, ihm bin der Wunsch jedes möglichen Sohns, um nach Hause zurückzugehen. Ich habe viel Zeit verbracht in den letzten Monaten, aus diesem Grund gearbeitet. Jetzt jedoch haben viele
meiner Landsmänner ihre Hoffnung verloren. Neue Wochen haben viele
Änderungen gesehen. Es ist Zeit jetzt, über die Wahrscheinlichkeiten
unseres Erfolgs sorgfältig zu untersuchen, unsere Zukunftspläne, und
wahrheitsgemäß zu sein. Betreffend die erste Ausgabe der Wunsch, die Länder gestohlen von uns zurückzubringen. Es ist zu vielen der Soldaten der preussischen Verteidigung-Liga, die frei geworden, welche, die einzige realistische Weise, in der dieses erzielt werden kann, Krieg ist. Während Krieg, für viele unserer Brüder annehmbar scheinen kann, einer muss auch, die Wahrscheinlichkeiten für Erfolg, zusammen mit den Wahrscheinlichkeiten, für weiteren Schaden unseres Vaterlandes wiegen. Es ist folglich, die Entscheidung der Kommandanten von pVL, die diese Wahl nicht mehr ausgeübt werden muss. Wir fangen ab jetzt an, an neuen Plänen zu arbeiten, um Sieg zu erzielen. Immer müssen wir, ohne Ehre uns erinnern, können kein Sieg dort sein. Nach Preußen der Sieg!  May 13 To my friends I have taken notice, that fewer people seem to be around these space. I was saddened by the death of "Patricia" aka "luvlinks" who left so many encouraging comments in my guestbook, and on my blogs. Life, is a very fragile gift. Every day in my own health struggles, that thought was reinforced, and I hope that all of my friends here, know how I feel about you all. Even if sometimes, for some of you, I may go a long time without commenting, I DO pay attention, to what you write, how you are feeling, etc. You all are, in many ways, an extension of my family. When I was in America, this blog saw me vent, a great deal, about a lost relationship, health issues, and political issues. You all listened and provided feedback and encouragement, usually at just the moment, it was needed. So thank you, and please, take care of yourselves, I wish to not lose any more friends, any more family. May 07 keine Today was a rainy day, as was yesterday. April 26 Risstropfen auf Papier : Buchstaben vom Stalingad Today was a funeral of an old family friend. To listen to the old ones speak, is at the same time giving a sense of pride, as well as of perhaps, a view of what the future may hold, if we are unable to correct wrongs, from the past. I finished, after much work, my book this week. Many of these people were interviewed for it, including the deceased. I expect it to be published quite soon. "Risstropfen auf Papier : Buchstaben vom Stalingad"- "Tear drops on paper : letters from Stalingrad" We will learn from the past, and will not make the same mistakes the next time, I hope.
